A
Very Different
Finger Cymbal Instruction CD
Learning to play finger
cymbals can be an exercise in frustration. Students usually attempt
to learn from and practice finger cymbals to Mid-East music CDs,
which exacerbates the learning process. Students frequently express
these concerns:
- I cant hear
the difference between dums and teks
- I cant hear
the rhythm with all those other instruments playing!
- There are too many
beats; I just dont understand whats going on.
- The music is too
fast for me to play cymbals.
- I dont know
which beats Im supposed to play or dance to.
The Zills on Fire
Instruction CD fully addresses these issues.
This CD is unique in
that:
- Drum beats are totally
electronically produced and mixed on computer, which enhances the distinction
between low-pitched (dum) and high-pitched (tek) sounds, and
provides for precision timing. Students will benefit early in
their training, and develop a good timing sense from the start.
- All tracks include
a metered metronome overlay, which assists students in recognizing the meter
intuitively, rather than intellectually. This enhances the internalization
of the rhythms, so that counting and playing them
become natural and nearly effortless.
- The rhythms begin with
a minimal number of beats required to produce them, and evolve to more complex patterns
as the rhythms progress. This progression lends a sense of continuity
to the learning experience.
The Zills on Fire
Study Guide includes:
- a synopsis on my specific
method of teaching zills with research into how the brain learns;
- choosing and working with
zills;
- zill sounds and playing
technique (illustrated with photos);
- music basicspulse,
tempo, meter, and discerning rhythm;
a musical notation key in graphical format;
- arranging zill patterns
to some basic rhythms, with suggestions for when to dance to
the rhythms; and finally,
- description and diagrams
(in TUBs notationtime unit boxesideal for those with
no musical background) for each of the 18 rhythms on the CD.
